FEDERAL & STATE REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN CDL

 In the United States, the federal government regulates commercial driver’s license (CDL) laws under the oversight of The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). 


Please note that while there are many requirements that are federally mandated, some states have other own specific CDL requirements. It is important to check with your state of residence on these requirements.


To obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or Class B:

  • You must be at least 18 to drive in the state or 21 to drive interstate or to drive with hazardous materials.
  • You must be a US citizen or have a green card with permanent residency
  • You must already have a valid driver’s license with 1 to 2 years of driving experience (depending on the state) 
  • You must have a clean driving record (with no active revocations or suspensions in any state). 
  • You must past a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical examination/physical ensure you are in good health.
  • You must be able to speak English.
